The Landscape Transforms

In September, almost overnight, the countryside changes. Vineyards turn to gold and crimson, the sunflowers have bowed their heads and are almost ready to be harvested and the low autumn light makes everything seem somehow calm. I always think the village where I live looks at its most beautiful in autumn — a little quieter, but glowing.

The Grape Harvest Energy

I, myself, am not a winemaker, but we are fortunate to be able to help some friends with their harvest every year. It's great fun, really interesting and we always come away with a few litres of the first pressing, which is delicious and full of antioxidants. At the end of the day, exhausted, we all sit down to eat together, which always involves great food, great company and lots of laughs.

The Wildlife Returns

Where I live, we have a fabulous view of the Forêt de Scevolles from the garden. In summer, when the crops are tall and the heat is stifling, we rarely see much action. However, in Autumn it is akin to a wildlife theatre, with so many roe and red deer, entire families of wild boar, badgers, foxes and hares. We are also very lucky to be able to hear the deer rut (brame) without leaving home. It's just magical!

The Peace and Quiet

The 'rentrée' isn't just about the kids going back to school! I do love the liveliness of summer, but by September, the village exhales. The tourists drift away, the roads calm down, and the bars, restaurants and cafés feel like they belong to us locals again. It’s also so much easier to get things done. During July and August, lots of businesses close down for 3-4 weeks, notaires' offices are closed for their holidays, pharmacies find it hard to get stock in and so on....

The Weather Is Just Right

I’ll admit, the waves of 'canicule' in July and August can sometimes be a bit too much for me! But autumn brings crisp mornings and golden afternoons perfect for a walk, and cool evenings when lighting the wood-burning stove feels like a treat.

The Local Life

Because life slows down, it’s easier to slip back into the rhythm of real French living in autumn. It’s when I feel most rooted here — not just someone living in France, but part of its everyday life.

So yes, for me, autumn is when France feels its most magical — quieter, cosier, and more real. And that’s why, after all these years, it’s the season I look forward to most.
